A garden with robust slug predator populations can absorb significant slug pressure without gardener intervention. The key predators in Kitsap County's winter garden are:

Ground beetles (Carabidae) — These are your single most important slug allies in a Pacific Northwest winter garden. Sharp aggregate barriers — Coarse horticultural grit, crushed eggshells, and sharp sand create abrasive surfaces that slugs are reluctant to cross. However, some formulations include a synergist called EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) that has shown toxicity to earthworms in some studies. If using iron phosphate, choose pure formulations without EDTA additives. Use sparingly and strategically — near seedlings during vulnerable transplant windows, not broadcast across entire beds.

Ferric sodium EDTA baits — avoid for similar reasons as above. Despite being marketed as an upgrade to metaldehyde, the EDTA component raises ecological questions this approach isn't willing to set aside.

Diatomaceous earth — situational. Sharp-edged fossilized diatoms do deter slugs but also harm beneficial insects, earthworms, and any soft-bodied organism crossing it. Nematodes (Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita) — A genuinely interesting biological control.
