Caused by the soil-borne pathogen *Plasmodiophora brassicae*, clubroot attacks the root systems of broccoli, cabbage, kale, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kohlrabi, arugula, radishes, and turnips, causing swollen, distorted galls that choke off water and nutrient uptake. Plants wilt in full sun, turn yellow, and stunt severely — often mistaken for nutrient deficiency or simple drought stress. What makes clubroot uniquely dangerous compared to other fungal diseases worsened by wet Kitsap springs is its persistence. Clubroot spores don't die off in a season or even a few years — they can remain viable in soil for 15 to 20 years, waiting for the next susceptible brassica root to infect. Kitsap County's cool, consistently damp clay soils create nearly ideal conditions for spore survival and spread, especially in beds with poor drainage. Spores move in splashed soil, on boots, on tools, and even in contaminated transplant soil from nurseries. If you're growing mustard greens or harvesting turnip greens alongside other brassicas, treat the entire family as a single unit when planning rotations and monitoring for symptoms. Buy transplants from trusted sources, wash tools between beds, and consider dedicating boots or gloves to any bed with known or suspected contamination.
